Alternative Testing Techniques for Instrument Transformers
The webinar discusses the purpose of current transformers (CT) in the field which is twofold: (1) to be used inaccurate measurement systems and; (2) to be used in complex protection and control schemes.
For both applications, reliability and precision are paramount. During power restoration after fault conditions, testing capabilities and resources might be limited due to time constraints. Field testing of multi-tap CTs as per the IEEE C57.13.1 standard recommendations is time-consuming if carried out on a tap-by-tap basis. Therefore, the concurrent testing technique is recommended and the necessary tests are carried out on multiple taps simultaneously, thus reducing testing time drastically.
In this presentation, AC and DC methods applied to condition assessment of metering and protection current transformers in the field are described.
