The FC3 fault converter is an add-on for Megger reflectometers (e.g., the Digiflex Com) used for detecting humidity faults, especially in communication cables. Reflectometers supporting the TDF-mode (Time Dependant Fault) and the IFL-mode (Intermittent Fault Location) facilitate the location of intermittent humidity faults in connection with the fault converter.
This small unit works by injecting a direct current into the defective cable. The measuring signal of the reflectometer received by the fault converter has a DC offset of up to 200 V with changing polarity. The humidity fault will be changed by the electrolysis caused by these polarity changes. This effect is visible as a changing reflection on the display of the reflectometer. The periodic polarity change of the direct current intensifies the effect and simplifies finding the location of humidity faults as the DC change causes a galvanic reaction at the humid area, which becomes visible as an amplitude change of the measuring impulse.
As an extra note, we recommend that you use a dual input unit, such as the TDR2000/3, since the best approach is the use of the differential or IFL mode to make the fault visible.
